HISTORY OF THE REDEEMED CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF GOD.

Pa Josiah Akindayomi in a vision saw what was written on a blackboard. “The Redeemed Christian Church of God,”. Pa Akindayomi, who was unable to read or write, was miraculously able to record these words on paper. God also told him during this encounter that the church would spread to the ends of the world and that He would meet the church when the Lord Jesus Christ manifested in glory.

Following that, the Lord made a covenant with Pa Akindayomi that is comparable to the Abrahamic covenant found in the Bible. If only church members will serve Him sincerely and obey His Word, he claimed, He the Lord would supply all of the needs of the congregation in an astounding dimension.

Thus, the Redeemed Christian Church of God was established in 1952 with the Lord Himself intending for it to conquer the world. Until they were able to purchase some land and relocate to its current home at 1-5 Redemption Way, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, the church continued to meet at 9 Willoughby Street (formerly 1a, Cemetery Street).

God had communicated to Pa Akindayomi about his successor sometime in the early 1970s. The Lord revealed to him that this man would be a young, educated man who was not a church member at that time. So, in 1973, when a young university lecturer joined the congregation, Papa was able to identify him in the Spirit as the person the Lord had previously spoken about. As a mathematics lecturer at the University of Lagos at the time, Enoch Adejare Adeboye, soon became active in the church. He joined the team of interpreters responsible for translating Pa Akindayomi’s Yoruba sermons into English. He received church pastor ordination in 1975.

Papa was getting ready for his Creator. He sent for Pastor Adeboye and spent a good deal of time explaining the covenant and the Lord’s plans for the church to him. Pastor Adeboye had received a revelation from the Lord a year prior that he would succeed Papa, but it was still too difficult for him to properly consider such a great responsibility.

Pa Josiah Akindayomi passed away at the age of 71. Pastor Adeboye’s appointment was formally announced by reciting Pa Akindayomi’s sealed proclamation after his burial, which sparked controversy.

The number of parishes has been expanding at a rapid rate since 1981, signaling the beginning of an open explosion. The Redeemed Christian Church of God has at least about 2000 parishes throughout Nigeria, according to the most recent estimate. The church is present in other African countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Gambia, Cameroon, and South Africa, on the global stage. Throughout Europe, the church is widely spread in France, Germany, and England. In addition to the Caribbean nations of Haiti and Jamaica, the United States maintains parishes in the cities of Dallas, Tallahassee, Houston, New York, Washington, and Chicago.

God is still performing wonderful deeds now all throughout the world through the Redeemed Christian Church of God. One of the church’s well-known programs, The Holy Ghost service, is an all-night miracle service that takes place at the Redemption Camp at Km. 46 on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on the first Friday of every month.

The Redeemed Christian Church Beliefs

The Redeemed Christian Church Believes in the following.

  • Justification by Faith
  • Sanctification (Holiness)
  • Prayer
  • Restitution

The entire Bible is inspired by God, without error and the authority on which we base our faith, conduct, and doctrine.

In one God who exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to this earth as Savior of the world.

Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood for our sins. We believe that salvation is found by placing our faith in what Jesus did for us on the cross. We believe Jesus rose from the dead and is coming again.

Water baptism is a symbol of the cleansing power of the blood of Christ and a testimony to our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the regular taking of Communion as an act of remembering what the Lord Jesus did for us on the cross.

Every believer should be in a growing relationship with Jesus by obeying God’s Word, yielding to the Holy Spirit, and by being conformed to the image of Christ.

As children of God, we are overcomers and more than conquerors, and God intends for each of us to experience the abundant life He has in store for us.
