HISTORY OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH ATLANTA CHURCH, GEORGIA.
First Baptist Church was founded in 1848 as a local Church in Atlanta Georgia, the ministry has been a beacon for Christ during both the most trying periods in American history and the darkest periods in the history of Atlanta. God has supported the First Baptist Church for 172 years as each generation—from inception to the present has recognized reliance on God and strived to uphold the accuracy of His Word, the Bible.
Even though the church had benefited from excellent pastoral care over the years, one particular pastor would guide it to unparalleled development and a global effect. The church chose Dr. Charles Stanley to serve as senior pastor in 1971. The church’s expansion was so rapid within a short period of time that, in order to accommodate the expanding congregation the church began to purchase properties around them that was available for sale in order to accommodate the congregation.
In the midst of this expansion, Dr. Stanley established In Touch Ministries in 1982 to extend his pulpit ministry’s media outreach and meet the nation’s rising demand for his preaching. Almost every significant American market was penetrated by the In Touch program in the 1980s, and Dr. Stanley’s distinctive, Biblical based preaching was heard in more than 1 million homes. Dr. Stanley can now be heard in every country on the planet via radio, or television broadcasts thanks to God’s blessing at the church and through In Touch.
It became clear that there was not enough room to accommodate further growth as the church continued to draw large crowds to its downtown position. So, in 1997, Dr. Stanley guided the congregation in making the historic choice to sell the premises in the city center and move to the current location at I-285 and North Peachtree Road. The church has continued to expand dynamically in its new location while continuing to shine God’s light to Atlanta and the rest of the world.
With Dr. Stanley’s retirement, the Pastoral Succession Plan was legally implemented, and Dr. Anthony George was appointed as the new Senior Pastor.
