The former Compaq Center is now home to the 16,800-seat Lakewood Church, which hosts two sessions in Spanish and four services in English each week. Joel Osteen is happily married to his wife, Victoria Osteen who is also the co-lead pastor of Lakewood Church.

HISTORY OF LAKEWOOD CHURCH, TEXAS.

Lakewood Church was originally called Lakewood Baptist Church. Established on the 10th of May 1959 by the founding father John Osteen. John Osteen and his wife Dodie, who founded Lakewood Church, have impacted the lives of millions of people in more than 100 nations.

They co-hosted a weekly television show that was broadcast to 100 different nations. John Osteen wrote 45 books, as well as a large number of instructional materials and audiotapes. The story of Dodie Osteen’s miraculous recovery from metastatic liver cancer after physicians gave up on her is told in the book Healed of Cancer. One of the reasons Lakewood is known as An Oasis of Love in a Troubled World is due to her sincere warmth and compassion.

Prior to his passing in 1999, Pastor Osteen had earned the title of “pastor’s pastor” and was frequently engaged organizing conferences and seminars in Houston and other cities. John Osteen won the respect and admiration of people all over the world via his honesty, ethics, and leadership, whether he was preaching to millions of people on television or just one person.

The Lakewood Church congregation is multi-generational and multi-ethnic, having members from different countries across the world, and is renowned throughout the world as a model for harmony and variety. Through worship services, classes, and local missions, Lakewood reaches thousands of individuals each week in Houston and the surrounding areas. Through its outreach programs for hospital patients, prisoners, nursing home residents, homeless shelters, and other outreaches, Lakewood’s passion for helping has a real impact on people.

The previous home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, the Compaq Center, was purchased by Lakewood Church in 2003. After spending the following 18 months renovating the venue, the first of seven weekly worship services was held in the new 16,000-seat auditorium on July 15, 2005.

Over 10,000 new members joined Lakewood in the first week, and after a year it was one of Houston’s most well-liked tourist attractions. The following few years saw Lakewood continue to expand, and it now has a weekly attendance of over 45,000 people.

How do you become a member of Lakewood Church?

There is no official membership process; after three visits, you are considered a member of the Lakewood community. Each service ends with a reception in the New Beginnings where you may get to know some of the church staff members.

Lakewood Church believes in the following;

The entire Bible is inspired by God, without error and the authority on which we base our faith, conduct, and doctrine.

In one God who exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to this earth as Savior of the world.

Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood for our sins. We believe that salvation is found by placing our faith in what Jesus did for us on the cross. We believe Jesus rose from the dead and is coming again.

Water baptism is a symbol of the cleansing power of the blood of Christ and a testimony to our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the regular taking of Communion as an act of remembering what the Lord Jesus did for us on the cross.

Every believer should be in a growing relationship with Jesus by obeying God’s Word, yielding to the Holy Spirit, and by being conformed to the image of Christ.

As children of God, we are overcomers and more than conquerors, and God intends for each of us to experience the abundant life He has in store for us.
