The Topic of Deeper Life Daily Manna Devotional for 20th February 2024 Is “PASS NO BUCK”

Text:  Genesis 3:1-13 (KJV)

The Fall
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.
5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9 But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

KEY VERSE: Genesis 3:12

DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY

On the desk of President Harry Truman of the United States between the mid-1940s and early 1950s was a painted glass sign with the inscription, “The Buck Stops Here.” He adopted it as a motto to guide him take responsibility for decisions without shifting the blame for the consequences. Later, in his farewell address to the American people in January 1953, Truman said that when a leader had the responsibility to own up to a wrongdoing, “He can’t pass the buck to anybody. No one else can do the deciding for him. That’s his job.”

Adam and his wife failed this defining candour test and were exposed for breaking God’s law. People lose their essence and personality when they try to disconnect themselves from the unpleasant effects of their deeds. Not admitting to the works of your own hands when they go awry reveals you as a person of low character unfit to be trusted. God punished Adam and Eve for ‘passing the buck’ and trying to put the blame on Him for their sin.

We cause lasting disastrous harm when we attempt to run away from the outcome of decisions we take out of our own volition. First, those around such characters would be hesitant to enter into any relationships with them, fearing they might throw their partners under the bus over freely taken resolutions. Also, it denies pardon from a God who desires sincere confession of sin as a condition for forgiveness.

Refusing to acknowledge our shortcomings when confronted with reality aggravates the situation as it did with Adam and Eve. But we can avoid further peril if we ask the Lord for power to overcome iniquity in the first place, so that we do not fall into the easy temptation of passing the buck after the deed.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Search not for a fault elsewhere when it is with you.
