Who is T.D Jakes?
T.D. Jakes is the founder and senior pastor of The Potter’s House of Dallas, Inc., as well as the CEO of TDJ Enterprises, T.D Jakes Foundation, T.D Jakes Real Estate, LLP. He also has a number of books that have achieved New York Times bestseller status.
He has received many nominations and wins for many honors, including the NAACP Image Awards, a Grammy, and the 2007 President’s Award for his book, Reposition Yourself from Essence magazine. As the star of BET’s Mind, Body, and Soul, he has hosted numerous national radio and television programs, and he frequently appears on both Oprah’s Lifeclass and the highly regarded Dr. Phil Show.
In Charleston, West Virginia, T.D Jakes was born on the 9th of June, 1957. Jakes was raised in a business-minded household, His father Sir, Earnest, Sr ran a janitorial business with three locations and 52 staff members. Jakes’ Mother Odith was a schoolteacher, she spent her free time selling Avon goods.
Jakes started selling veggies from his mother’s garden when he was eight years old. He marketed Avon and Amway goods, delivered newspapers, and mowed grass while still in high school. Jakes eventually dropped out of high school and followed a call to preach after being overwhelmed by the passing of his father in 1972 and ridicule from his peers over his faith. He eventually was admitted into West Virginia State College to complete his college education. Jakes dropped out of college after a year because he was unable to balance the obligations of school, church, and full-time work at a chemical plant.
Jakes was a pianist and choir director at the First Baptist Church where he was raised. A modest Pentecostal church in Charleston called Greater Emanuel Gospel Tabernacle invited Jakes’ choir to perform one evening. Jakes started speaking in tongues that evening during the service, which Pentecostals view as proof that a person is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. To support his new Pentecostal religion, he was a pianist and choir director at the First Baptist Church where he was raised.
