OPENING PRAYER: Father, give me the understanding of Your word.
MEMORY VERSE: 1 Timothy 4:15
“Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.”
BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Timothy 4:13-16 (KJV)
13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
LESSON INTRODUCTION:
Last week, we considered three of the ways by which one can obtain spiritual knowledge. Searching, seeking and studying. Apart from obtaining spiritual knowledge, we also learnt that studying the word of God leads to divine approval, holy living and learning from the mistakes of others. However, some mysteries of God cannot be known through mere searching, seeking or studying. Therefore in this third part of our series we shall learn other ways of obtaining spiritual knowledge.
TEXT REVIEW: 1 Timothy 4:13-16.
The Apostle Paul charged Timothy (His son in the Lord) to do the following:
i. Give attention to reading, to exhortation and to doctrine. V13.
ii. Give attention to the gift in him. V14.
iii. …………….. V15a.

v. ……………… V16a.
vi. ………………V16b.
LESSON OUTLINES
1: MEDITATION
A. Meditation is deeper than studying in that:
i. Meditating on the word involves ‘eating, chewing’ and regurgitating’ the word, so that it becomes part and parcel of our spirit and life.
ii. It is what God Himself recommended to Joshua (Josh.1:8), and the Bible confirms it as a sure way of being blessed by God (Ps.1:1-3)
iii. Meditation takes time but then all good things take time and the sweetness which comes from meditating on the word of God compensates more for the time spent (Psalms 104:34).
iv. One of the best of times to meditate on the word is at night, when the environment is relatively quiet (Ps.63:6).
B. Things to meditate on:
i. Meditate on the works of God (Ps.8:3-4) and the lessons of nature (Matt.6:28-29)and you begin to get a glimpse of the mystery of the new birth as you realise how mighty the King of kings is and how nothing shall be impossible unto Him.
ii. Meditate on the sufferings of Christ (Heb.12:3) and you may stop asking questions of the mystery of the Bride of Christ and just march on grateful that you are a part of it.
iii. Meditate on the end of life (Deut.32:7) and you wil be grateful that when you enter into eternity you will be with Jesus Christ.
CLASS ACTIVITY
1: Teacher should ask the class how they can effectively meditate on the Scripture without distraction.
2 WAITING ON THE LORD
A. Not all truths could be known by searching or seeking (Eccl.3:11). However, what you cannot obtain by searching or seeking you can get by simply waiting on the Lord (Isaiah 40:28-31).
B. Seeking and searching may be tiresome, waiting is refreshing and renewing.
Moreover:
i. The Lord promises to teach those who wait on Him (Ps.25:5).
ii. Even if you do not deserve the information, He will give it to you out of His abundant mercy (Ps. 123:2).
C. Therefore learn to wait on the Lord and as you wait on Him, do so with the expectation of learning something mysterious, something deep, something beneficial. He will not disappoint an expectant waiter (Ps.62:5-6).
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Class should discuss what they understand by waiting on the Lord.
SUMMARY:
Meditation and waiting on the Lord are important ways of acquiring spiritual knowledge in a deeper form.
CONCLUSION:
A combination of waiting on the Lord and meditating on His Word will surely open many locked spiritual doors and usher you into the secret rooms of spiritual knowledge (Isaiah 8:17). The ways of the Lord are marvellous, yet, simple.
EVALUATION:
Teacher should ask the students to explain what they understand by meditation.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, I receive the grace to meditate on Your word and patiently wait on You.
ASSIGNMENT:
Students should identify five (5) ways of overcoming distractions when studying the Word of God.
