Ordinary Weekday / Peter Damian, Bishop, Doctor
First Reading:Â James 3:Â 13-18
13Â Who is a wise man, and endued with knowledge among you? Let him shew, by a good conversation, his work in the meekness of wisdom.
14Â But if you have bitter zeal, and there be contentions in your hearts; glory not, and be not liars against the truth.
15Â For this is not wisdom, descending from above: but earthly, sensual, devilish.
16Â For where envying and contention is, there is inconstancy, and every evil work.
17Â But the wisdom, that is from above, first indeed is chaste, then peaceable, modest, easy to be persuaded, consenting to the good, full of mercy and good fruits, without judging, without dissimulation.
18Â And the fruit of justice is sown in peace, to them that make peace.
Responsorial Psalm:Â Psalms 19:Â 8, 9, 10, 15
R. (9a) The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
8Â The law of the Lord is unspotted, converting souls: the testimony of the Lord is faithful, giving wisdom to little ones.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
9Â The justices of the Lord are right, rejoicing hearts: the commandment of the Lord is lightsome, enlightening the eyes.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
10Â The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for ever and ever: the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
15Â And the words of my mouth shall be such as may please: and the meditation of my heart always in thy sight. O Lord, my helper, and my redeemer.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

Gospel:Â Mark 9:Â 14-29
14Â And coming to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes disputing with them.
15Â And presently all the people seeing Jesus, were astonished and struck with fear; and running to him, they saluted him.
16Â And he asked them: What do you question about among you?
17Â And one of the multitude, answering, said: Master, I have brought my son to thee, having a dumb spirit.
18Â Who, wheresoever he taketh him, dasheth him, and he foameth, and gnasheth with the teeth, and pineth away; and I spoke to thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not.
19Â Who answering them, said: O incredulous generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.
20Â And they brought him. And when he had seen him, immediately the spirit troubled him; and being thrown down upon the ground, he rolled about foaming.
21Â And he asked his father: How long time is it since this hath happened unto him? But he said: From his infancy:
22Â And oftentimes hath he cast him into the fire and into waters to destroy him. But if thou canst do any thing, help us, having compassion on us.
23Â And Jesus saith to him: If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
24Â And immediately the father of the boy crying out, with tears said: I do believe, Lord: help my unbelief.
25Â And when Jesus saw the multitude running together, he threatened the unclean spirit, saying to him: Deaf and dumb spirit, I command thee, go out of him; and enter not any more into him.
26Â And crying out, and greatly tearing him, he went out of him, and he became as dead, so that many said: He is dead.
27Â But Jesus taking him by the hand, lifted him up; and he arose.
28Â And when he was come into the house, his disciples secretly asked him: Why could not we cast him out?
29Â And he said to them: This kind can go out by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
