MFM DAILY DEVOTIONAL 12TH JUNE 2021

Guilt is an emotional experience. It often arises from the feelings of a person’s conscience being stricken in a given situation, making the person feel bad. It could also arise from a situation where one should have been less bothered, but now feel ashamed, disappointed and frustrated.

Human courts judge culprits and criminals guilty of offenses they lawfully or unlawfully committed. Unfortunately, the situation makes people have a feelings of, “Perhaps I should not have done it; oh! I wish I never participated; if only I had known”, all these and many more. This is nothing but self-guilt! Self-guilt is therefore judgement against oneself. It brings regrets and selfcondemnation, either right or wrong.

Guilt, when it is objective and leads you to repentance, is acceptable to God. As a child of God, you will definitely feel guilty when you fall into sin or get involved in an ungodly activity. A victim of self-guilt often goes all the way to judge himself or herself wrongly to outright condemnation.

There are instances in the Bible of people who sinned against God and suffered guilt, but repented genuinely. We have the example of David, when he committed adultery with Bathsheba (2 Sam.12-17). Jonah felt guilty when the storm arose in the sea; he was quick to agree that he had sinned against the Lord.

Both men repented before the Lord, and the Lord forgave them. This is the way of the Lord and His desire for His children. He knows our frailty and doesn’t want us to remain in guilt because the consequences can be grave. Rather, God wants us to confess our sins, pains, and offenses whenever they arise (1 John1:8- 9).

He condemns our wrongdoings but doesn’t forsake us. Once we repent of our sins, He draws us unto Himself in love and restores us to our rightful position as joint heirs with Christ Jesus.

Therefore, remaining in self-guilt is spiritual and emotional self-imprisonment!
