MFM DAILY DEVOTIONAL 26TH SEPTEMBER 2024

An African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far go together.” Our text today underscores the supernatural power of two. This fact is further corroborated by the transformation men and women experience after their wedding. Many married people begin to record achievements in geometric proportion as against the arithmetic proportion they had when they were single. The Bible also says that one will chase a thousand and two will chase ten thousand. This wisdom must have informed Jesus’ practice of sending His disciples on evangelical missions in two. The apostles continued this in the early church. In John 3, Peter and John went together to the temple at the hour of prayer. The Book 0f Acts also mentions the missionary trips of Paul and Silas, Paul and Barnabas, and Paul and John Mark. Besides, the believers did all things in one accord, and that includes prayer and mundane things like daily distribution of bread and provisions.

In the early church, the apostles faced stiff opposition and persecution by the highest authority in the nation. They were threatened, intimidated and physically assaulted; yet they did not bulge. Let us examine the steps they took to surmount the pressure, threat and intimidation of the enemies of the cross in their time. First, they did not give in to fear. Both Peter and John told the Sanhedrin that they would rather obey God than man and that they could not stop speaking the things they had seen and heard. That was uncompromising stand! Next, when they were released, they went to their company. By this, the Scripture means the other ten apostles or the 120 that were endued with power in the Upper Room on the day of Pentecost. The truth is that Peter and John had a company, the rest of apostles and believers who shared the same eternal values and goals with them. Do you have a company you resort to and seek their support when necessary? If you don’t, it is high time you got one.

Beloved, if you don’t have a prayer partner, I suggest that you prayerfully seek and find one. Remember that the church gathered and prayed Peter out of Herod’s incarceration and death sentence.
