DAILY MANNA DEVOTIONAL FOR TODAY

To defile means to make unclean, unacceptable to God or make impure. The Lord clearly spelt out in His word what will defile a man in His sight.

We are given in our text series of animals the children of Israel must never eat because it made them ceremonially unclean. And it is noteworthy that most times, to the best of their ability, they endeavoured to keep the commandment.

The passage today centres mostly on birds that were not to be eaten. They included the eagle, the ossifrage, the ospray, the vulture, the kite, all forms of raven, etc. Even in the New Testament when Peter was being prepared to go to the house of the Roman Centurion, Cornelius, to preach to him, he told the Lord, “I have never eaten anything common or unclean” (Acts 10:14). However, under the new covenant dispensation, God goes beyond the ceremonial, to the thoughts of men. Jesus said, “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit… pride, foolishness: all these evil things come from within, and defile the man” (Mark 7:21-23).

God is holy; and the calling of the Christian is a holy one. He is therefore expected to live above all moral defilements in order to please God. God’s command to His followers remains: “be ye holy for I am holy.” The true Christian has a moral obligation to remain undefiled before his God who sees in the secret and in the open. Hypocrisy, eye service, “a holier than thou” attitude, pride, envy, unforgiving spirit, malice, etc., must not be found in a true Christian.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Avoid any form of defilement if you must please the Lord.
